Flames players score for their clubs
When it comes to their clubs in South Africa, Malawian players try to deliver the goods that even defender Limbikani Mzava netted the winner for Mpumalanga Black Aces on Saturday.
Four days after offering average displays for the Flames, Mzava netted the winner as Aces defeated Maritzburg United 2-1 at Kanyamazane Stadium to qualify for Nedbank Cup quarter-finals.
According to South Africa’s leading soccer publication, www.kickoff. com, Aces grabbed the opener through Zambian veteran striker, Collins Mbesuma, from the penalty spot before Mzava scored in the closing stages of the match through a free-kick.
Still in South Africa, another Flames midfielder, Robert Ng’ambi, scored in the 11th minute for Platinum Stars as they lost 2-1 to Polokwane City at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
Ng’ambi scored when he capitalised on a poor clearance from a free-kick and saw his header deflected into the net, but Edgar Manaka equalised in added time of the first half.
Eventually, Carrington Nyadombo netted the 110th minute winner in extra time to guide City to Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.
Former Flames forward, Essau Kanyenda, did not play for City during the game.
Flames captain Mzava and Ng’ambi featured for the Flames when they lost 2-1 at home to Guinea in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign on Tuesday.
