Flames regroup Monday for Tanzania friendly

Malawi National Football Team regroups on Monday for an international friendly against Tanzania on June 13.

The Flames will face the Taifa Stars in Tanzania as part of preparations for the upcoming Cosafa Cup and World Cup qualifiers.

Players will be required to undergo a Covid test upon arrival at Mpira Village in Blantyre.

Those who test negative will proceed with camping whereas those found positive will be put into isolation.

Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda said the team would start preparations for Tanzania after confirming and making due application processes for international friendlies.

“Remember, the issue is that the focus is on the Fifa window which opens as we start next week,” Gunda said in a written response.

All things being equal, the Flames will take part in this year’s Cosafa championship slated for July in South Africa.

Malawi were expected to start preparations for the 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifiers this month but changed plans after the games were shifted from June to the September, October and November Fifa windows.

The Flames were drawn in Group D of the qualifiers alongside giants Ivory Coast, Cameroon and neighbours Mozambique.

Football consultant Kelvin Moyo said the friendly is an opportunity for coach Meck Mwase to assess some of his home-based players.

“It is my hope that players will be picked on merit. We have seen several players who are performing for their respective clubs. I personally believe that this is the time to give them international exposure.

“We know that foreign country-based players will dominate the Afcon [Africa Cup of Nations] finals squad but we have some players who are enjoying top form in the local league and need to be given a chance,” Moyo said.

Silver Strikers’ red hot forward Maxwell Phodo and Mighty Wanderers midfielder Vitumbiko Kumwenda are some of the local players who are currently enjoying a rich vein of form in the TNM Super League.
