The Flames are expected to start training in Blantyre today ahead of the clash against China Select on January 28, newly-appointed Flames’ interim Coach, Gerald Phiri Senior, has disclosed.

The match is part of the official opening of Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe.

Phiri said they have received communication from Football Association of Malawi that all players were expected in camp yesterday.

“The general secretary can give you more details, but the plan is to train for one week here in Blantyre at Chiwembe and go to Lilongwe for another week to give the players a chance to have a feel of the new stadium. We are told the stadium has a turf with more grass compared to Kamuzu Stadium,” he said.

Phiri, who is also in charge of the Under-20 national team, justified his review of the Flames’ squad.

“We thought that we would play against China National Team, but it transpired that it is not like that, so we thought this would be the best time to give a chance to young players who are capable of playing in the senior team, but do not have a chance. I am optimistic that the players will do better. This might be one step to the rebuilding of a good team,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mzuni FC Coach Alex Ngwira has hailed Phiri for including in the squad the club’s striker, Lughindiko Mushani.

“He is a good striker and managed to score 11 goals in the 2016 TNM Super League season. This will also encourage him as it means growth in his football career,” Ngwira said.
