Malawi national football team, Flames must win forthcoming matches as they have slumped by six positions from 95 to 101 on the latest Fifa/Coca-Cola world ranking.
World football controlling body, Fifa, on its website www.fifa.com, revised the monthly ranking Thursday to give a glimpse of strong and weak national teams across the world.
The ranking is calculated based on results, strength of opposition met and average results over the years.
For these reasons, in Africa Malawi has slipped by five places to position 28 out of 54 teams. Djibouti are the tail-enders, whereas Algeria still occupy number one continental position.
Placed 71st in the world and 15th in Africa, Zambia are number one in Southern Africa with South Africa coming second in the Cosafa football block while being rated 73rd and 18th in the world and on the continent respectively.
In the continent, reigning Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) kings, Cote d’Ivoire lie second, Ghana take up third slot then Tunisia fourth followed by Senegal (fifth), Cape Verde Islands (sixth), Cameroon (seventh), Congo (eighth), Egypt and Nigeria are placed ninth and 10th respectively.
Argentina sit at the top of the world ladder, reigning Fifa World Cup champions, Germany, are second followed on third place by Belgium then fifth-positioned Portugal. Colombia, Spain, Brazil, Wales, Chile and England complete the world’s top 10.
“The results of 149 international ‘A’ matches have been taken into account in the October edition. This takes the total number of matches evaluated so far this year to 668,” reads www. fifa.com.
