The Malawi national football team will miss the services of defender John Lanjesi during Thursday’s decisive Cosafa Castle Cup preliminary round group match against Angola in South Africa after picking two yellow cards.

Lanjesi picked a yellow card in each of the two games to accumulate a suspension.

The Nyasa Big Bullets skipper played at the right back in the first game but was shifted to central defence on Tuesday.

The Flames Coach, Ronny van Geneudgen, said it was unfortunate that they would miss the services of Lanjesi in the crucial tie.

Geneudgen hinted that he might recall Be Forward Wanderers defender Lucky Malata to replace Lanjesi.

He also pondered on the possibility of handing Silver Strikers defender Chisomo Mpachika a debut.

“We can’t keep on lamenting the absence of John. We will fix the situation by either changing our formation or bringing in other players. I have the confidence in the squad I picked. I know all the players are capable of playing well,” he said.

Geneudgen also said that Wizards wing-back Ian Chinyama was doubtful after getting injured on his debut against Mauritius.

Chinyama has since been ruled out. He was set to undergo an operation in South Africa yesterday after suffering three fractures in the face.

The Flames are on the brink of exiting the competition following their 2-0 defeat to Tanzania on Sunday and goalless draw against Mauritius on Tuesday.

Angola and Tanzania have four points each whereas the Flames and Mauritius have a point each.
