Flames to be paired with Cosafa teams

Malawi National Football Team will be paired with their fellow Council of Southern Africa Football Association (Cosafa) opponents in the forthcoming 2018 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) qualifiers.

The Chan qualifiers will start next month and the finals will be staged in Kenya next year.

This means that the Flames will likely face teams such as Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Mozambique, Namibia, Réunion, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

According to Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, the Confederation of African Football(Caf) communicated to them that Malawi will face their fellow Southern African counterparts.

Gunda said Caf will soon release fixtures for the campaign.

He described joining the Chan tournament as one way of keeping the Malawi Under-23 team, that drew 2-2 against Chinese club, Guangzhou R&F, over the weekend as a step in the right direction.

“As Fam, we are ready and soon will have a coach and have the boys in camp. We need just to pick four or five additional players with Super League experience. However, all this will depend our next coach,” Gunda said.
