Floods hit Zomba areas

Floods caused by heavy rains have affected some people of Zomba Chisi and Thondwe areas, the authorities have confirmed.
Zomba District Commissioner, Raphael Piringu, said reports indicate that Thondwe and Likangala rivers have flooded wreaking havoc in the two constituencies.
Piringu said there was a possibility that Phalombe River may also cause floods due to heavy rains that the areas where the river passes through, are receiving.
“Very soon we will start our assessment of the current damage. Meanwhile, we are taking measures to restore the current situation to normal,” Piringu said.
One of the affected people, Kondwani Chabwera of Chaima Village Traditional Authority Mwambo, Zomba, said the floods have affected a number of villages in the area.
“The rains started on Wednesday and they have affected a number of villages, including Havara, Chingondo, Chinkhwangwa and Kaleso villages,” Chabwera said.
Floods have also hit other districts such as Lilongwe and the authorities warned those in flood-prone areas to relocate.
Earlier last year, the two areas of Zomba were among those that were hit by Cyclone Idai, which affected many people in Southern Africa.
