FMB cricket starts with surprises
Mpingwe Sports Club (MSC) says this year’s FMB T20 Cricket Knock-Out tournament has started with surprises after defending champions, Polypack, were booted out in the preliminary round.
Chambo Fisheries, formerly Pacific, and Mapeto David Whitehead (DWSM) and Sons booked their tickets to the quarterfinals.
Chambo humbled the 2014 champions, Polypack, by 50 runs. Shiraz Zaveri took three wickets as Chambo reached the last-eight.
Chambo made 175 runs in 20-overs, whereas Polypack, chasing down the score, made 125 runs.
In the second preliminary round match, Mapeto won by six wickets when they knocked out Sun ‘N’ Sand. Arshad Wadivala made 41 runs whereas Iliyas Bhikhu took four wickets for Mapeto.
Sun ‘N’ Sand scored 139 runs in 20-overs, but Mapeto chased down the score in
17-overs.
MSC executive board member and sports director, Abdul Wahab Jagot, said they were impressed with how the tournament had started.
“It shows that any team can win or lose. Very few gave Fisheries a chance to beat the defending champions, but they stunned most individuals and team. The status of the team doesn’t matter,” he said.
Jagot said they expect more shocking results during the quarterfinals set for this weekend.
In quarterfinals, Natsons (Sucam) wil l play Anchor Industries while Pharmanova and Victoria Forex Bureau will also clash. Fargo will entertain Chambo Fisheries while Easypack meet Mapeto.
FMB increased this year’s sponsorship from K1 million to K2.5 million.
