FMB Marketing Manager, Widdey Nsona, has said they are happy that most of Malawi under-17 national team players are from the national league, which the bank sponsors through the National Youth Football Association (NYFA).

Nsona made the remarks after 14 players from the league earned selection into the Junior Flames’ squad that is in Mauritius for the Cosafa Youth Championship. The competition kicks off today.

“As FMB, we are very proud to see that the majority of the under-17 players who are in Mauritius, play in the FMB Under-20 League. This clearly shows that our investment in the youth and their talent is bearing fruits. As a sponsor, we wish them luck and we have confidence in them that they will carry the country’s flag high,” he said.

Last year during a similar championship in Mauritius, the league’s products also dominated the team which won a bronze medal.

Some of the FMB league products in the squad include Kennedy Nankhaima, Bornwell Matemba, Wongani Sabiti (goalkeepers), Hamidu Balala, Luciano Matewere, Daniel Sandukira, Joseph Balakasi, Innocent Nhlema, Vitumbiko Nyirenda, Haji Walli- Captain (defenders), David Daud, Frank Titani, Newton Nsoma, Auspicious Kadzongola, Tathedwa Willard, Chinsinsi Maonga, Patrick Mwaungulu (midfielders), Chikondi Mbeta, Alex Tsamba and Prince Chingamcheke (strikers).

The junior Flames have been drawn against the hosts, Zimbabwe and Botswana in group A whereas group B is made up of South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia and Madagascar. Champions, Namibia, have opted not to compete this year.
