FMB Under-20 League grows

It is a double celebration in the FMB Under-20 Youth Football League following the increase of sponsorship from K20 million to K24 million and the addition of three districts.

Rumphi, Kasungu and Mulanje districts have, through a vote, joined the youth league, which comprises Blantyre, Mangochi, Zomba, Mchinji, Dedza, Lilongwe, Nkhata- Bay, Karonga and Mzuzu districts.

Speaking during the pre-launch cocktail at the bank’s headquarters in Blantyre on Wednesday evening, FMB Group General Manager, Corporate and Commercial Banking, Phillip Madinga, said they had made strides since they started supporting the league in 2009 at K4 million.

“Our league has made leaps and bounds. We have visible results. We have a whole list of players that we can claim as our very own products,” he said while warning players against ill-discipline.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President, Walter Nyamilandu, asked other institutions to emulate FMB’s gesture.

“It is not easy to cough K24 million for a youth league. We need others to follow this path to help us have a strong base,” he said.

National Youth Football Association (NFYA) Chairperson, Chimango Munthali, said the additional three districts and the increase in the sponsorship was encouraging.

The league will be launched early next month in Kasungu after the three districts collected most votes during the ‘Expose the talent in your area’ campaign.

Speaking earlier during the draw for the voters, FMB Head of Marketing, Slyvia Mataka, said they were impressed with how soccer fans supported the initiative through the bank’s ‘Zili m’manja’.

During the draw, 125 people won prizes such as money, branded T-shirts, cloth, caps and opener rings.
