Folindo Rodrick produced one of the all-time great rounds in Blantyre Open Golf Championship history to pip Peter Lumbe to glory at Blantyre Golf Club on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Rodrick played a tidy golf, producing a bogey-free round and birdied holes five and 10 on the third day.
Sponsored by Business Computer Services (BCS), the tournament ended up as a two-horse race between Rodrick and his closest rival Lumbe.
Rodrick was lost for words after the win.
“My rival played really well and made life difficult for me. I played a controlled round of golf. I thank all the sponsors and the golf committee for such a wonderful tournament,” he said.
This year, Rodrick outclassed other notable golf generals including Ignacio Kambale, Hudson Kantwanje, Chipiliro Mzanda, Lester Tandwe and John Gift Mwakhwawa to walk away with a trophy, APC Uninterruptible Power Supply BV 500 from Business Computer Services.
He also got Castrol GTX Diesel, K50,000 Chipiku voucher, 5kg Mkango maize seed from Seed-Co and a night full board for two at Ryalls Hotel.
In the ladies’ category, Bose Kamphulusa, playing off handicap 24, emerged winner with gross 96 net 72 while Zita Rodrick, playing off handicap 20, finished as runners-up.
Blantyre Sports Club Golf captain Chimwemwe Chimwaza, who is also BCS Business Development Manager, said the over 160 professional and amateur golfers participated.
“Special mention to all of you golfers for taking part in the three day championship. We had representation from almost all golf clubs in the country, and some from Zambia. We do not take that for granted,” he said.
The headline sponsors for this year’s Blantyre Open Tourney were Business Computer Services and B-Connect, HABP, Protea Hotels by Marriott and Seed-Co.
