Football fraternity mourns Dean Josiah

Grief has engulfed the football fraternity following the death of the former patron of defunct Epac FC Dean Josiah Banda who died at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) Monday after a short illness.

The body of Josiah Banda was laid to rest on the same day at Mtsiliza Cemetery in Lilongwe.

Josiah Banda served as chairperson of Lilongwe and District Football League (LDFL) now Central Region Football Association (CRFA). He also served as Treasurer for Lilongwe giants Civo Service United.


CRFA General Secretary Bernard Chiwiriwiri Harawa said he was shocked with the demise of Josiah Banda who was also patron of Chipiku Premier Division side Mtsiliza United.

“The region has lost a great man who contributed massively to the development of the game in Malawi,” he said.

Civo General Secretary, Ronald Chiwaula, said the nation had lost a sportsman.


“He was a true sportsman and we have lost as a nation. He was always available to support the club during difficult period,” Chiwaula said.

Josiah Banda will also be remembered for sacrificing his team’s [Epac] TNM Super League status to Civo three years ago after the civil servants were relegated from the top flight league. Apart from his role at Epac and Civo, he also provided financial and material support to several teams in the top flight and lower leagues.

Nyasa Big Bullets Chief Administrator, Albert Chigoga also said the nation has lost.

“It is a great loss to the football fraternity. He was passionate for football and invested a lot to its development,” he added.
