Football season starts on November 14

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) says the 2020/2021 football season will officially kick off on November 14, 2020 with a Charity Shield attracting four teams before the TNM Super League commences a week later.

TNM Super League champions Nyasa Big Bullets, runners-up Be Forward Wanderers, Fisd Challenge Cup winners Blue Eagles and Airtel Top 8 Cup kings Silver Strikers will tussle in the Charity Shield.

This was agreed during the Fam Executive Committee meeting held in Nkhata-Bay.

“The committee resolved to set up a fund of K77 million to carter for Super League match organisation and officiation costs. This fund will be tapped from $83,000 (K62.2 million) that was earmarked for contingency in the second phase of Fam Covid-19 Relief Program. The other K14.8 million will come from the savings to be made from discontinued payment of monthly stipends to referees from November 2020,” reads part of the statement from Fam.

“The committee also noted that since the league will start without fans, there will be need for special funds to carter for referees and other match organisation expenses that are normally covered by gate revenue.”

According to a statement from Fam, the season will run up to July 2021.

The announcement of the kick off date means Super League clubs will only train for a month. A fortnight ago, Presidential Task force on Covid-19 sanctioned the resumption of training for elite Super League teams from October 17.

Be Forward Wanderers General Secretary, Victor Maunde was excited with the development.

“We have been waiting for this good news and we are eager to start playing football again. On our part, we are almost set to start preparations for the new season,” he said.

On his part, Civo Service United General Secretary, Ronald Chiwaula while saying it was a good move to start the season, was worried with fitness of the players.

“It is good news but for fitness level of the players they need more time before the actual kick off of the games. Some of the players have gained weight and they will need more time to be in shape,” Chiwaula said.

The TNM Super League was suspended on the eve of kick off in March this year due to Covid-19.
