Foreign-based Flames players eye club glory

Malawi national football team’s foreignland-based players are expected to return to club action this weekend after inspiring the Flames to a 1-0 win over Botswana in a 2022 World Cup preliminary round qualifier at Kamuzu Stadium on Tuesday.

Stand-in Captain John ‘CJ’ Banda will go straight into Caf Champions League action this weekend with the hope of steering his Mozambican side, UD Songo, to the group stages of the continental competition.

Songo travel to Bulawayo for a showdown with Zimbabwean Premier League champions FC Platinum at Barbourfields Stadium tomorrow.

The former Blue Eagles captain said he would work hard to help the Mozambican club reach the paying ranks of the continental competition against a side that ousted Nyasa Big Bullets in the preliminary stage.

“I hope to transfer my national team form to my club and help it to go further in the Champions League. It would be important for me to help my club reach the group stages as that would guarantee us more matches,” Banda said.

The linkman is expected join his teammates in Tete today before flying to Bulawayo.

Banda’s compatriots Gabadinho Mhango, Richard Mbulu and Gerald Phiri Jnr also return to club action in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League.

Mhango’s Orlando Pirates will lock horns with Chippa United at Orlando Stadium Saturday.

Pirates are stuck on 10th position on the log table with five points from four matches.

Mhango believes his side is capable of beating Chippa to put its league title chase back on track.

“I am back at my club and the focus is now on helping it return to winning ways. I enjoyed myself at the national team and my game is on a high,” Mhango said.

Phiri Jnr, who converted a penalty during the Flames’ victory, will team up with Mbulu on Sunday when their side Baroka FC plays against Black Leopards.

The Limpopo derby will see the two stars lining up against Flames veteran midfielder, Robert Ng’ambi, at Thohoyandou Stadium.

Baroka are ninth on the table with five points from four matches.

Azerbaijan-based attacker Robin Ngalande was expected to arrive at his club Zira FC yesterday in time for weekend games.
