Foreign stars for Malawi Open

Players from Zambia, Germany and Italy are expected to compete in this year’s Malawi Open Tennis Championship set to start Thursday at Country Club Limbe in Blantyre.

Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTA M) General Secretary, Stan Kaunda, said the four-day championship will draw 50 players at the Malawi National Tennis Centre, which is at the club.

“We have some volunteers who usually operate in Mzuzu. These guys are from Italy and Germany and they have confirmed their participation. Last year’s men’s championship was won by a volunteer from Italy [Egon Tascher],” he said.

“Zambia, alongside Zimbabwe, has been sending players regularly. So far, players from Zambia have expressed their interest in competing whereas Zimbabweans are yet to confirm their participation.”

In the previous events, players from Tanzania and Kenya used to take part in the Malawi Open.

Puma Energy, Lube Masters, Mibawa Studios and Illovo Sugar will sponsor this year’s competition.

Last year, Tascher, who is the Mzuzu-based volunteer, and Malawian Mary Luhanga won the championship for the men’s and ladies’ categories.

Tascher defeated Malawian, James Matewere, 6-3 6-1 6-3 whereas Luhanga overcame rival, Patricia Matola-Mlomba 7-6.
