Forex woes chock Castel operations

By Llywellenie Mpasa:

Castel Malawi has said it is still searching for forex to resume production of spirits—Malawi Gin, Malawi Vodka and Premier Brandy.

The company’s human resource and corporate affairs director Gloria Zimba said the firm failed to meet the demand for the spirits since it suspended production last month due to forex shortage.

Zimba said this on Friday at an event where the company presented certificates of recognition and gifts to 57 employees who have served the company for more than 15 years.

Speaking on the sidelines of the celebrations, Zimba said forex shortage in the country is negatively impacting on its output.

“For our business, most raw and packaging materials are imported, especially glass bottles. If we have forex constraints, it makes it difficult for us to be very consistent in our supply,” Zimba said.

But Zimba said the company is banking on a possible injection of forex from the Reserve Bank of Malawi or other financial institutions.

During the ceremony, Castel awarded staff with a framed certificate of long service and presents depending on the longevity of service.

“Your contribution throughout these years has helped Castel grow and thus it is important to reward such dedication,” she said.

One of the awardees, Bonaventure Nanthuru, who is Castel chief brewer and has worked with the company for 30 years, said the award is motivation.

During the event, employees who served for 30, 25, 20 and 15 years received IBR Iron sheets, 250 litres upright refrigerators and mountain bicycles, respectively.
