Former coaches demand wages

DEMAND THEIR DUES—Mkandawire and his backroom staff

Former, She-Flames coaches have asked Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to pay them their dues one month after they were sacked.

The association terminated the contracts for the Abel Mkandawire-led technical panel due to poor performance during the 2019 Cosafa Women’s Championship in South Africa and the 2020 Olympics qualifier against Kenya.

However, some members in the technical panel have voiced their concerns over the delayed payment of their dues for the match against Kenya.

“It is sad that they are not saying anything about our money. They owe every one of us about K400, 000 for the Kenya match. We got the money for the Cosafa but we do not know when they will pay us for the Olympics qualifier,” said one of the coaches who asked for anonymity.

Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda Wednesday refused to comment on the issue.

She-Flames players are also owed game bonuses for the Cosafa Women’s Championship and the 2020 Olympics qualifier.

The players each get K60, 000 for a win but they were given half of the amount for winning matches against Madagascar and Comoros Islands at Cosafa Women’s Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay in August this year as well as the 3-2 victory over Kenya at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Several senior players confided that they were owed about K90, 000 each for the three victories in two competitions. She-Flames were knocked out of the 2020 Olympics after losing 5-3 to Kenya on aggregate.

During this year’s Cosafa Women’s Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay in August.

She-Flames defeated Madagascar 2-0 and Comoros Islands 13-0 but lost to defending champions South Africa 3-1 to exit the tournament in the group stages for the second consecutive year.
