Former Inspector General Mary Nangwale laid to rest
The body of the former Inspector General (IG) of Police Mary Nangwale was laid to rest on Tuesday in full police honour at Katimba CCAP cemetery in Limbe.
The late Nangwale died in the early hours of Sunday after a long battle with kidney failure.
She was the first and so far the only woman to become the IG of Malawi Police.
It was a sombre mood as relatives, members of the Malawi Police Service and the general public paid their last respects to Nangwale.
The climax was when McBrown Nangwale, son to the late Mary Nangwale, made a speech and led his wife and sister in singing a hymn It is well With my Soul.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Aggrey Massi, said Nangwale was a role model to female police officers and girls in general.
He praised Nangwale for her dedication and hard work, saying she, among other things, initiated 997 police rapid response.
“Mary Nangwale was a record-breaker. She was the first woman to be the Inspector General of police, so she showed the other female police officers and the girls in the country that it was possible to rise in the police. He was very hard-working officer. She initiated 977 police rapid response,” he said.
Inspector General of Police, Lextern Kachama, described Nangwale’s 30 years in the service as illustrious and dedicated, saying Malawi Police Service has lost a source of inspiration and a library of advice.
“Nangwale was a mother to all of us in the service. She was a very dedicated officer and very professional. She did police work the way police work ought to be done. We have lost a source of inspiration and a library of advice in her passing,” he said.
After an illustrious career in the police service spanning over 30 years, serving at the Malawi Embassy in UK and being a pastor at the Living Waters Church, Nangwale is now resting.
Nangwale hailed from Siula Village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba and is survived by two children and four grandchildren.
