Former intelligence director out on bail

Principal Resident Magistrate Viva Nyimba has granted bail to former Director-General of National Intelligence Services Kenam Kalilani and former State House Information and Communications Technology Officer Chance Chingwalungwalu.
The two are answering charges of theft of government computers.
They are suspected to have committed the offence in Blantyre in June this year.
Bail conditions include payment of cash bonds of K500,000 each and non-cash surety of K500,000.
The conditions further require that the two should also surrender their travel documents to the police and should not leave Lilongwe without notifying the police.
There was a standoff between the prosecutors and the defence team led by Madalitso Kausi when the former wanted to add one more bail condition that the accused should comply with the investigators.
“The court has added the condition, though we felt that our clients have always cooperated with the investigators,” Kausi said.
The court reconvenes on August 31, 2020 for plea.
