Former Mec CEO Thandi Nkovole laid to rest

THE body of former Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Acting Chief Elections Officer Thandi Nkovole was laid to rest at the HHI Cemetery in Blantyre yesterday.

Nkovole collapsed and died on Wednesday after a meeting with Mec Chairperson Jane Ansah. She was later rushed to Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre where she was pronounced dead.

Speaking then, Ansah expressed shock at Nkovole’s demise describing her as a hard working person. “As a commission, we have lost one of our hard working individuals who was so crucial in solving the challenges Mec has been facing in recent times,” Ansah said then.

Yesterday, top government officials including Minister of Information and government spokesperson, Nicholas Dausi attended Nkovole’s burial ceremony.

Dausi described the late Nkovole as a hardworking person whose service will be greatly missed at the commission. “We have indeed lost a hardworking person here, her death is a loss not only to the commission but also to the nation,” he said.

Nkovole joined the electoral body in 2002 as director of civic and voter education before being appointed as acting deputy chief elections officer in August 2016.

She was later appointed acting chief elections officer in March this year. The late Nkovole is survived by two daughters.
