Former Wanderers GS pursue Fifa law course

ON THE RISE—Kanyenda

Former Be Forward Wanderers General Secretary, David Kanyenda is among six students in Africa studying the inaugural Fifa Diploma Football Law in his quest to become Malawi’s first certified football law expert.

Kanyenda, a lawyer by profession, started the course on February 17 in Miami, United States of America.

“I am delighted to be part of the few individuals from Africa studying inaugural law course. I was privileged to be named among those sitting at the board for Players Status Committee at [Football Association of Malawi] Fam and this is the opportune time to broaden my knowledge and master football law,” he said.

The 13 months course is expected to take the students to five continents across the world undertaking at least five major modules in international football law.

“We completed the first session in Miami-USA in February. The programme highlights deeper insight in football structures, transfer regulations, discipline, doping and integrity matters. We will also cover issues to do with proceedings in the Court of Administration for Sport (Cas) to ably provide advice to football stakeholders upon completion,” Kanyenda said.

In the meantime sessions have been suspended due to coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, one of the country’s football analyst George Kaudza Masina said Kanyenda has taken the right direction and will develop into an important figure in football circles as far as legal issues are concerned.

“The guy is ambitious and wants to learn every day. I am pretty sure he will make it being already a lawyer with a special interest in football. He will be an asset and will play an important role in settling disputes and football wrangles,” he said.
