The charitable organisation, Damson Chilewani Foundation, on Saturday donated school uniforms to orphaned primary school pupils from around Chisitu area in Mulanje.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at Traditional Authority Chikumbu’s Mtenjera Court, the foundation’s executive director, Damson Chilewani, said they thought of helping the needy pupils after being approached by Mtenjera Community-Based Organisation (CBO).
To buy the donated uniforms, the foundation received financial support from a charitable and environmental conservation body, Natural Conservation and Humanitarian Organisation.
“It is the objective of our foundation to ensure that people who are underprivileged are able to have basic necessities in life and when Mtenjera CBO committee approached us and told us about the plight of these children, we did not hesitate but coming in to help. “We know what it means to have no school uniform for these pupils. There are several disadvantages, including being chased out of class.
“We are ready to help the government and other charitable groups in providing some services to poor people. We know members of Parliament and councillors cannot do all things on their own and need our support,” Chilewani said.
Mtenjera CBO chairperson Grey Likaka said since the CBO started in 2005, it has been facing a lot challenges but not many people have been forthcoming with both financial and material support.
“We decided to approach this foundation after approaching many people and organisations without any success. At least 1,080 underprivileged children are being helped through this CBO but we do not have an office where we can hide during the rainy season. We need more support and if you can manage connect us to other organisations of goodwill,” Likaka said.
