Four children hide under a bus to Mulanje

People in Mulanje were shocked on Monday when they saw four children dropping off under the mudguard of a bus belonging to National Bus Company which travelled from Lilongwe to Muloza in Mulanje.

According to Mulanje Police Public Relations Officer, Gresham Ngwira, the four are said to have entered under the mudguard near the gear box of the bus.

“The bus, with registration number BQ 4500, started off from Lilongwe at night to Mulanje. The children said they were destined in Blantyre but when the bus reached Blantyre they did not realise that they had arrived. They ended up going together with the bus to Mulanje and they were found as people were offloading their luggage.

When asked what their aim was, the four children said they were desperate for transport to take them to Blantyre where they would be begging from wellwishers,” Ngwira said.

The children’s ages range from 11 to 13.

They come from Lilongwe, Dowa, Blantyre and Mangochi districts.

Meanwhile, the Magistrate’s Court in the district has ordered that the children be sent to Chilwa Reformatory Centre.

The order follows a request by the district social welfare office for the destitute children to get reformed.

The development comes just two weeks after some children were also found at Mzuzu Bus Depot when they sneaked under another bus that travelled from Lilongwe to Mzuzu.
