Four months old baby needs help

Parents of a four-month-old baby who has been diagnosed with a heart problem called endocardial cushion defect have appealed for help to enable the baby to be treated abroad.

According to medical experts, the baby, Cassey, who was born on May 3 and is now four months old, needs to be treated within six months after birth. This means the baby has two months to receive treatment for her condition.

According to Keck Medicine of Southern California University in the United States, endocardial cushion is an abnormal health condition where the walls separating all four chambers of the heart are poorly formed or absent.

According to the university, surgery is needed to close the holes between the heart chambers and it can only be done when the baby is three to six months old.

This comes at a time there are many cases of children dying of diseases that Malawi’s central hospitals have failed to treat.

The baby’s father, Evans Chilumpha, has since said the family requires K7 million to cater for medical expenses, and that the family has already managed to raise K2 million which may cater for travel and accommodation expenses.

“According to doctors at Kasungu District Hospital and Adventist Hospital in Lilongwe where we have been seeking medical attention, we only have two months to take Cassey to India.

“We appeal to the general public to donate whatever amount they can so that her life can be saved. On my own, I have managed to raise K2 million but it is very hard for me to raise the rest and looking at the time we are left with, it is worrisome. We need help,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cassey is at home with her parents in Kasungu.

People of goodwill may contact Cassey’s parents on 0999 924 444.
