Four to represent Malawi at Commonwealth Youth Games

FOUR athletes are camping in Lilongwe to represent Malawi at this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in Nasau, Bahamas. The Games get underway on Tuesday.

Mercy Malembo (athletics), swimmer Michael Swift, Austin Chikwapula for judo and lawn tennis player, Mwaiwathu Kadammanja are expected to depart for Bahamas on Sunday.
Malembo is scheduled to compete in 3,000 metres and Swift in 50 metres freestyle.

Chikwapula is set to contest in 60 kilogrammes showpiece with Kadammanja earmarked for the singles category.

Swift and Kadammanja are training at African Bible College in Lilongwe whereas Malembo and Chikwapula are at Bingu National Stadium and Kamuzu Institute for Sports, respectively.

This gives Chikwapula just a day’s rest after two days of flying as he is scheduled to compete on Tuesday evening.

Kadammanja is set to play the following day while Malembo and Swift will compete on July 22.

But Team Leader, Dennis Kumwenda, brushed off fears that the athletes may fail to perform because of jet lag.

“We will arrive on Monday around midday. The first competition for our athletes is on Tuesday evening. So, they will have enough rest,” Kumwenda said, adding that the only concern was that coaches will not accompany the athletes.

“For now, we have coaches from various federations who are training the athletes. But they [athletes] will be on their own in Bahamas. But I will be working with my fellow official, Precious Kamongo, in guiding them.”

Kumwenda said the coaches have missed out on the trip because organisers insisted on just two officials—leader of delegation and another official.

He said Kamongo was picked for the trip because she is also an athletics coach and, being female, she would balance the travelling team genderwise in line with organisers’ requirements.
