Fracas at Civo ahead of Fisd Cup final

Ugly scenes refuse to die in Malawi football, the latest incident being a brawl involving some Be Forward Wanderers and Kamuzu Barracks supporters ahead of Saturday’s Fisd Cup final at Civo Stadium.

The incident occurred soon after the TNM Super League game between Epac and Red Lions on Sunday.

A fracas ensued when one of the fans was denied entry into the stadium because he was suspected to have carried juju.

The fans confronted each other and could be heard exchanging bitter words.

Most of the fans involved are prominent members of the two teams’ supporters committees.

Kamuzu Barracks use Civo Stadium as their home ground.

In an interview Monday, Nomads General Secretary, Mike Butao, while condemning the incident, described it as mind games ahead of the big clash.

“We know this is a very tense week for both sets of supporters but we are appealing for calm. No amount of violence or friction prior to or during the match will win any of the teams the cup. Only football on the pitch will do that,” Butao explained.

“So we urge both Wanderers and KB supporters to refrain from any kind of confrontation and to trust that their teams are preparing adequately to grab the cup. Football should be the winner on the day.”

KB General Secretary, Michael Chamayele, expressed ignorance on the incident.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, has promised tight security during the game.

“Preparations are underway for the match and let me assure all the soccer fans that we are trying our best to have tight security on Saturday. We are engaging all the stakeholders,” he said.

The match promises to be a thriller as KB will be looking for their first silverware since 2013 whereas Wanderers are looking for the second trophy this season having won the Carlsberg Cup.

The Nomads reached the final after beating Blue Eagles 1-0 at Kamuzu Stadium while KB defeated Silver Strikers by the same margin at Silver Stadium.
