Unknown people have destroyed houses of three people belonging to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) at Mwenelondo in Karonga Central Constituency.
UTM supporters have also been targeted by unknown people.
MCP district chairperson Emmanuel Nkhoma told The Daily Times that the incidents happened in the evening, when some MCP supporters were celebrating the victory of Leonard Mwalwanda.
“Unknown people went to MCP constituency secretary Leonard Mbewe’s house and attacked it. His son was also beaten up. The other victim is, we only know him as Munthali, a diehard MCP supporter. He was also assaulted for supporting Mwalwanda,” Nkhoma said.
Karonga Police deputy spokesperson Frank Black confirmed the development.
“We went to the scene and found that three houses were stoned. We have taken statements from the victims and investigations are underway,” Black said.
Meanwhile, UTM regional governor for the North Moses Mlenga has said four houses belonging to their supporters at Gomi and Mlare were demolished and the matter has been reported to the people.
“I don’t want to speculate on who has done that. But what I can say is that, according to the victims, the people who came to demolish the houses were saying they were doing it because we have lost elections,” Mlenga said.
Meanwhile, UTM candidate Frank Mwenefumbo has written to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) complaining of what he said electoral irregularities that have failed the elections to be free, fair, and credible enough for declaring the winner.
