Domestic chess top sponsors, Mayeso Mphande and Francis Muleso, have increased sponsorship from K600,000 to K1 million.
The duo, who sponsored their maiden tournament last year, have come back ahead of this year’s competition to be played in July in Lilongwe.
In a statement, the Ghana-based economist, Mphande, said they were encouraged by Central Region Chess League’s (CRCL) handling of last year’s event, hence the increase.
“So, we reward them by coming back in a bigger way,” he said.
Mphande, who is also a Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) executive committee member, added that the sponsorship is for ladies and open categories.
During last year’s tournament, the duo was hailed for reviving CRCL chess after it had endured a seven-year sponsorship drought.
In the event that took place at Simama Hotel last year, Malawi’s highest-rated player, Candidate Master, Chiletso Chipanga, survived a tie-break with Fide Master Gerald Mphungu to win first position.
CRCL chairperson, Khama Chindole, said they will make good use of every tambala for this event.
Mphande used to play chess alongside players such as Felix Khechi, Petros Mfune and Gerald Mkangama while at Chancellor College.
His co-sponsor, Muleso, who is an IT and business consultant based in South Africa, said he likes supporting chess.
