Francis Muluzi, who is relation to former State president Bakili as well as Minister of Health Atupele Muluzi, has dismissed suggestions that he has been coerced into joining the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), further saying he will not reverse his decision because he wants to serve the nation.
Blantyre-based Francis surprised people when he expressed interest in joining the MCP, and announced his intention to contest for the Blantyre Kabula Constituency parliamentary seat, when a horde of MCP aspiring parliamentary candidates paid a courtesy call on veteran politician Sidik Mia on Tuesday.
Francis, who claimed that he was being pressurised by unknown people to reverse his decision, said he would not change his mind.
“I am not turning back. We know that this is election time and this is the ideal time for a politician to come in the open and declare which party they are leaning towards. I have, therefore, joined the MCP and will contest as parliamentarian on its ticket.
“If you look at history, Dr Bakili Muluzi [former president who stood and won on the United Democratic Front ticket from 1994 to 2004] started working with the MCP as Secretary General. People may be surprised that, despite notions that it would be impossible for Francis to work with MCP, I have joined the MCP. I want to help the country solve its problems and I can say clearly here that, come 2019, I will be member of Parliament.
“I am not here to talk about the family. I love my family and have nothing against it. Just that I have decided to embark on my political journey with the MCP and I will be there for a long time. I have not been bought and I have joined on my own volition,” Francis said.
