ON FAMILIARISATION—Phiso briefs journalists

Newly appointed Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture, Francis Phiso, has pledged to support all sporting codes in the country.

Phiso made a surprise visit to Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday, where Be Forward Wanderers played Mlatho Mponela in a TNM Super League match.

Speaking at half time of the match, Phiso said, while football had been getting the lion’s share of government funds, it was important to support all sport codes in the country.

“Besides supporting football, we should also look at ways of promoting other sporting codes such as boxing, rugby, volleyball and netball. Our efforts in promoting football should not make us forget other sporting codes that equally deserve attention.

“Sports codes such as netball have put Malawi on the map but national teams continue to face problems despite representing us well at international level. It is my sincere hope that we will find solutions to sports problems,” he said.

Phiso said he would invite stakeholders to brainstorm and find solutions to challenges haunting the country’s sports sector.

He cited the need to have proper infrastructure for Malawi to produce outstanding athletes.

Phiso said he was not a stranger to sports in the country, having been sponsoring football and netball competitions in his Blantyre North Constituency.

“I have also been a goalkeeper for the Malawi National Assembly team since 2009 and I can even challenge some of these goalkeepers in the Super League. I am a keen follower of football and have been following netball for some time,” he said.

Phiso is making his first appearance in Cabinet after being appointed alongside other ministers towards the end of last week.

He was entrusted with the position ahead of other personalities with a proven sports background such as Lands Minister Symon Vuwa Kaunda, and his Health counterpart Jappie Mhango.
