Frank Banda fires Songo to the top
Former Silver Strikers versatile midfielder Frank Banda scored the winner as his Mozambican side Sports Union of Songo climbed to the summit of the 16-member elite Mocambola League on Sunday
With compatriot Charles Swini manning the posts, it was Banda who made the difference, firing into the net a left-foot free- kick that broke the resistance of hosts Liga Desportivo de Maputo.
Songo have made it two consecutive wins and lead the standings with six points, two points ahead of second placed Chibuto FC.
Verdade newspaper of the neighbouring country reports that Telinho put the hosts in front only for Luis Maquis to restore parity for the visitors from Tete Province before Banda’s stunner.
Another Silver player Chawanangwa Kawonga was reportedly in action as Chibuto drew 2-2 with Quelimane on Saturday.
In yet another game involving Malawians, Ndaziona Chatsalira, John Banda and Schumacher Kuwali featured for Ferroviado de Nampula as they battled to a 0-0 draw against Costa do Sol.
It was the second consecutive draw for Nampula who are on 11th position on the standings with two points. The Mozambican league kicked off two weeks ago.
