The state has temporarily withdrawn a case in which it dragged to court Hip-hop artist Penjani Kalua, popularly known as Fredokiss, over charges bordering on giving handouts during the June 23 presidential election.
The state was supposed to parade eight witnesses Wednesday but it failed.
The state further told the court that they have insufficient evidence in the meantime to substantiate the case.
Chief Resident Magistrate, Gladys Gondwe, accepted the state’s application, saying it has a period of one year to take the case back to court if there would be evidence.
Fredokiss is son to Rumphi East legislator, Kamlepo Kalua.
In his remarks, Fredokiss said his brand was not affected because he knew the charges were wrong.
“It’s normal, everybody makes mistakes, I am not bitter. I knew I was innocent but I still had to come. I am a human being, even the systems are also run by human beings which make mistakes. There are several people who have been arrested and prosecuted wrongly, these things happen. But all in all the charges were not true,”
His lawyer Leonard Mbulo said:
“We are excited with the outcome of the court today, basically it means my client has been set free. The outcome means that if the state can manage to bring tangible evidence that will restart the case within one year,” he said.
Fredokiss was answering a charge of influencing voters at Mlowe in Rumphi District to vote for his father Kalua by giving them money.
