French Schools Drama Competition kicks off

The 29th edition of the French Schools Drama competition for secondary schools in the country starts tomorrow with regional contests.

The competition is driven by Jacaranda Foundation and French Embassy in Malawi in collaboration with the Association of French Teachers in Malawi.

Chairperson of the organising team Poya Chapweteka, who is also Maison de la France & Jacaranda Cultural Centre director of French studies, said everything was in place for the regional finals tomorrow.

“In Blantyre we have only four schools battling it out while in the Northern region we have an additional school Ekwendeni Girls that makes it five. Again the Eastern region two schools have pulled out soon we will not have it,” Chapweteka said.

He said the full list of schools participating this year in the regional finals are Marymount, Mzuzu Government, Phwezi Boys and Girls and Ekwendeni and the contest will take place at Mzuzu Government Secondary School.

In Blantyre, the battle will be at Jacaranda School for Orphans and the schools participating are Jacaranda, Providence, Stella Maris and St Patricks.

Two schools from the four regions will make it to the final from the regional contest.

Chapweteka said the theme for the competition this year is Qui sème le vent récolte la tempête.” (You reap what you sow).

The national finals are expected to be held on November 26 at a venue to be announced later.

Different prizes will be given out during the competition and they include bicycles and books.

The competition has also seen teachers of the winning schools being sent outside.
