French Schools Drama grand finale March 16

By Sam Banda Jnr:

The 31st edition of the French Schools Drama Festival grand finale will be held on March 16 at Stella Maris Secondary School in Blantyre.

Chairperson of the organising team and director of French studies at Jacaranda Cultural Centre and Maison de la France, Poya Chapweteka, said Wednesday all was set for the grand finale of the competition which aims at propelling the French language and uplifting the creative industry in the country.

“All schools participating in the grand finale have been informed. Accommodation for the schools has already been booked and at the moment we are getting the prizes ready,” Chapweteka said.

Seven schools who made it through during the regional finals held in November last year will battle it out during the grand finale.

Jacaranda School for Orphans in Blantyre, who are part of the finalists, are the defending champions.

The school broke a five-year jinx last year to claim the championship.

“We want to break a record by retaining the championship,” Jacaranda School for Orphans French teacher, Louis Zulu, said in November last year after they made it to the grand finale.

The other finalists are Marymount Girls and Phwezi Girls from the Northern Region, Robert Blake, Darlo Girls and Dedza from the Central Region and Jacaranda School for Orphans and Mulunguzi from the Southern Region.

“ The year 2018 was a transition. We only conducted the regional finals in November and not March. We decided to be having the national finals in March as we celebrate the Francophone week,” Chapweteka said.

The 31st edition of the French Schools Drama Festival is running under the theme ‘La Discrimination’.
