Friends of Clement Mkwalula grouping formed

A group dubbing itself Friends of Mkwalula has been formed to fundraise and help the former Malawi national football team goalkeeping great Clement Mkwalula to seek medical attention.

One member of the grouping Higger Mkandawire said they have formed the group after learning about Mkwalula’s plight last week.

“We visited him on Thursday to seek his consent before establishing the group. So he has allowed us to help him fundraise for his medical attention,” he said.

Mkandawire said they will work jointly with Mkwalula and his family to ensure transparency and accountability.

“We will soon outline fundraising activities which we intend to undertake. The money will go directly into Mkwalula’s account,” he said.

Mkwalula is hopeful the initiative will work.

“As I said some people have been inquiring but nothing yet has happened. I only hope that this will work,” he said.

Mkwalula recently expressed fear that he could lose his leg if he fails to undergo an operation on his right knee at Beit Cure International in Blantyre.

The former Flames goalkeeper needs to raise K5 million for the operation.

Mkwalula was Malawi’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire and competed for a place with top goalkeepers such as Dennis Saidi and Boniface Maganga.

In 1983, he was voted the best goalkeeper at the East and Central Africa Club Championship in Zanzibar and went on to play for Manzini Wanderers in eSwatini before returning home in 1992.
