Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has hinted that Burundian Coach, Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan, has given himself an upper-hand in the race for Malawi National Football Team’s permanent coaching job.

Fam General Secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, made the remarks after the caretaker coach inspired the Flames to their only victory—1-0 over Swaziland at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday— in the ill-fated 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group L campaign.

Malawi finished at the bottom of the group with five points from six games. Leaders Zimbabwe finished with 11 points to qualify for next year’s finals in Gabon.

Nyirenda, while commending Ramadhan for the win, said it was too early to determine whether Ramadhan would be given the job.

The former Nyasa Big Bullets coach took charge of the Flames in a caretaker role following the end of Ernest Mtawali’s reign on July 31.

“In the meantime, Ramadhan has given himself an advantage. He has an upper hand to be appointed coach. However, it is too early to confirm whether he will be given the job outright because the final decision will come from the Technical and Youth Subcommittee when it meets in seven days time,” he said.

Nyirenda said they will not delay in appointing the new coach so as to start preparations for Africa Nations Championship (Chan).

Ironically, during a press briefing held at Mpira Village last Thursday, Nyirenda told the media that the future of Ramadhan hinged on the Swaziland game.

In a post-match interview on Sunday, Ramadhan refused to comment further when asked if he had done enough to earn the job.

“You can ask Mr Suzgo Nyirenda at Fam. They are better placed to make assessments,” he said.

Despite not advertising the post, Fam has received over 20 applications from local and foreign coaches. When hiring the new coach, the association will make it 17 coaches in 16 years.
