By Audrey Kapalamula:

Three police officers, who were arrested for their alleged involvement in the theft of fuel worth over K50 million at Malawi Police Service headquarters in Lilongwe, have been granted bail.

National police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, Thursday said they are investigating the matter.

The police officers— Michael Mwale, James Mkwapatira and Joseph Kachapira—are among eight people who were arrested in January 2019 while the other five suspects are fuel attendants.

“Once we are done, we will take the matter back to court,” he said, adding that they would make more arrests.

The suspects are answering charges of theft by public servants, abuse of office and money laundering, among other offences.
