Fum supports Dowa Hospital Covid fight

The Farmers Union of Malawi (Fum) has donated about K1.3 million to Dowa District Hospital for the purchase of oxygen to help fight against the Covid pandemic.

The union said the pandemic has equally affected farmers and the agriculture sector in the country.

The donation was made on Wednesday, when Fum President Frighton Njolomole said the pandemic had affected market trends.

Njolomole said farmers had failed to sell their farm produce because buyers were unable to come into the country due to travel restrictions in countries.

He then said the union was committed to supporting the government’s efforts in the fight against the pandemic.

“Most of our farmers have been affected,” he said.

Dowa Hospital acting District Medical Officer Patience Nyondo Zimba said demand for the oxygen at the hospital had increased since the first Covid case was registered in December last year.

“The cases have been increasing, so has the need for oxygen. We have had people in need of the oxygen and there was a time we did not have enough oxygen. We are grateful that we have received this donation,” she said.

On Wednesday, the hospital was reported to have 10 Covid patients at its isolation centre.
