G4S plants 500,000 trees in 10 years
Moved by threats of deforestation, G4S Secure Solutions Malawi Limited has for the past 10 years planted 500,000 trees across the country.
Speaking when his company distributed seedlings in T/A Kapeni’s area in Blantyre, G4S Secure Solutions Malawi Limited Sales Director, Medson Kalambule, said the company decided to collaborate with communities to fight effects of climate change which are worsened by wanton cutting down of trees.
“We have been to Mzimba, Lilongwe, Dowa, Neno and Blantyre among other districts. This year we have reached Mulanje and Chikwawa besides other areas in Blantyre where we did not reach in the past years,” Kalambule said.
He said that the initiative is sustainable as there is ownership within the communities.
“In collaboration with district forestry offices, we identify 20 families from each village to champion the programme and also care for the trees,” he said
Kalambule said the initiative targets beneficial trees such as nsangu, moringa, acacias, jerejere, mthethe and mbawa among others.
“We want the trees to improve soil fertility, be used to boost body immunity among the beneficiaries as well as provide quality timber for their daily needs,” he said.
