Gaba ends goal drought

Flames striker, Gabadinho Mhango, who endured a difficult campaign in 2015, started the New Year in a spectacular fashion when he scored his first goal of the season in an Absa Premiership match between Bloemfontein Celtic and Ajax Cape Town on Friday night.

The former Big Bullets forward netted the opener after 21 minutes but his goal was not enough to earn a victory for Celtic as Ajax scored in stoppage time to salvage a twoall draw.

Mhango’s form on Friday night brought some hope that he could again set alight the Absa Premiership this season. It seems the fading star is slowly regaining his confidence on the pitch that made him one of the best strikers in the league.

On several occasion, he was a thorn in the Ajax defence and made some dangerous moves in front of goal. However, the former Brave Warriors attacker could have scored more goals but missed some golden scoring opportunities.

Mhango missed one of the best chances of the game, when, with only the goalkeeper to beat, he shot wide. Despite enjoying a good form, Mhango was in the 72nd minute replaced by Wayde Jooste.

The other Celtic goal was scored by Thabo Morena whereas Ajax netted through Toriq Losper and Nathan Paulse.

In his debut season in 2013, Mhango took the South African top-flight league by storm when he scored nine goals to finish as the second top goal scorer behind the eventual golden boot winner Bernard Parker.

In the same year, he was named Celtic’s players’ player of the season and top goal scorer. But last season, Mhango was a shadow of himself when he failed to replicate his form as he was plagued by injuries.
