Gabadihno Mhango 4 goals clear

Sends Orlando Pirates to 2nd spot

Flames striker, Frank Gabadihno Mhango, continued with his goal scoring spree in the ABSA Premier Soccer League (PSL) when he scored a brace in Orlando Pirates 2-1 victory over Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

Mhango has cemented his reputation in the race for the golden boot having taken his tally to 14 goals, four goals ahead of his closest challengers Samir Nurkovic of Kaizer Chiefs, Bradley Grobler of Super Sport United and Bongi Ntuli of Amazulu FC.

The win also helped Josef Zinnbauer’s side to move up to second on the log table with 36 points from 20 games, nine points behind Soweto rivals Chiefs before they meet next week.

“In a game in which Chippa were celebrating their first decade of existence, Mhango was a party pooper as he scored the opening goal in the 12th minute from penalty spot. Chippa defender Gregory Damons was late with a challenge on Innocent Maela and Mhango made no mistake placing his kick down the middle to beat Veli Mothwa in the home side’s goal,” reported Times Live.

“Mothwa was to gift Mhango his brace eight minutes later when he parried Abel Mabaso’s cross inside the area into the Bucs goal poacher’s path. Mhango took one touch to control the ball before placing into an empty net.”

With 10 matches before the end of the season, Mhango is 11 goals away from equaling former Zambian striker Collins Mbesuma PSL record of 25 goals set 15 years ago.

Soccer Laduma, sports journalist, Benjamin Nyirenda said Mhango is set to become the first Malawian to win PSL golden boot award.

“At the rate, things are going I don’t see anyone scoring more goals than him this season,” he said.

But Mhango has already surpassed his best tally since he moved to PSL in 2013.

His highest goal tally was nine goals in his debut season at Bloemfontein Celtic before achieving the same feat while playing for Bidvest Wits to win the league in 2016/17.

Former Bidvest Wits striker Mlungisi Ngubane was quoted by, praising the Malawian striker.

“He can reach 20 goals. He is still going to score more goals. For me, this is his first season in the PSL that he is enjoying himself. He has been trying to introduce himself in the previous seasons. He is a good player, strong, mobile and he is got everything,” he was quoted as saying.
