Gabadinho goes for final kill in golden boot chase

Flames striker Gabadinho Mhango of Orlando Pirates is hoping to become the first Malawian player to win South Africa’s Premier Soccer League golden boot award as the league winds up today.

Mhango is the current joint top goal scorer, alongside Namibian Peter Shalulire with 15 goals each. Drama is expected to erupt on the final day of the season as Mhango’s Pirates date Stellenbosch whereas Shalulire of Highlands will also be in action against AmaZulu.

Mhango insisted he was focusing on team glory-to play in the Confederations Cup-than personal achievements.

“It will be good for me to win the golden boot but first I want my team to finish the season on a high,” the former Nyasa Big Bullets forward said.

The battle for the golden boot award is still wide open as SuperSport striker Bradley Grobler is also in contention with 14 goals followed by Samir Nurkovic of Kaizer Chiefs, Knox Mutizwa of Golden Arrows and AmaZulu’s Bongi Ntuli who have 13 goals each.

Meanwhile, Mhango’s compatriots face a defining moment in the PSL as they will be engaged in survival battle with their respective sides.

At the lower end of the log table, three teams featuring Malawian players are in danger of being relegated. Gerald Phiri Junior and Richard Mbulu must rise up and save their side Baroka FC from the jaws of relegation when facing leaders Chiefs.

Baroka are currently 15th on the log table with 29 points whereas Black Leopards of Robert Ng’ambi are on position 14 with the same number of points.

The fate of Polokwane City will be confirmed today as they entertain Bidvest Wits. Polokwane have two Malawians, namely; defender Dennis Chembezi and striker Khuda Muyaba, who is unhappy at the Limpopo-based club.
