Gabadinho Mhango donates to Queens

Bidvest Wits’ striker, Gabadinho Mhango, celebrated his South Africa team’s recent triumph in the MTN8 Trophy by donating assorted items at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre on Wednesday.

The Flames striker lifted his first silverware in South Africa when Wits swept aside Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday. The champions received an equivalent of K400 million in prize money.

A statement from Wits revealed that the club shared the money equally with their players.

The former Big Bullets striker sneaked into the country on Wednesday and headed straight to the referral hospital where he surprised mothers with low birth weight and pre-term babies with the assorted gifts.

He then posted on his Facebook page: “Hi guys. After winning the MTN8 Cup, I decided to celebrate it by giving back to my people in Malawi. Malawians are the reason I am where I am today, and even though I can give things that are bought by money, I can never give back enough.”

Gabadinho said he flew into the country unannounced and returned to South Africa after fulfilling the charitable cause.

He noted that it was exciting to share stories with the mothers, joke with them and give out assorted items, including cash to each patient in the ward.

“I even made friends to wonderful twins named Trust and Triza, beautiful babies. Kangaroo mothers carry their babies skin-to-skin so as to regulate the body [temperature] of the babies for weight increase plus bonding. It was an eye-opening experience,” he added.

“I pray that God continues blessing and protecting these mothers who continuously dedicate hours of holding their babies just to ensure that they live. I cannot wait to go back to the ward some day and hopefully, help out in other wards and hospitals. God bless us all,” Gaba concluded.

The striker’s career has blossomed at Bidvest as he has been voted man-of-the match thrice in six games.
