OBSTACLE—Mhango will not face his former club

Inform Flames striker, Gabadihno Mhango, has suffered a blow in his chase for this year’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) golden boot award as he will miss Orlando Pirates clash against his former club Bidvest Wits due to suspension.

The Malawian striker who is enjoying debut season with Pirates having scored 14 goals is suspended for the match against his former side after accumulating four yellow cards.

He received a yellow card in a 2-1 victory over Chippa United in a game he scored a brace to inspire Pirates to second spot on the log table.

“Following his 4th yellow card, Gabadihno Mhango will serve a match ban against Bidvest on Sunday,” Pirates wrote on their Facebook Page yesterday.

Mhango lead the scorers chart in the PSL with 14 goals, four above his challengers and he looks set to be the first Malawian to grab the award.

Former Flames forward Essau Kanyenda is still recognised as the best Malawian striker to have graced PSL having scored 43 goals in 92 games for both Jomo Cosmos and Polokwane City FC.

Kanyenda came close to winning the PSL golden boot award when he scored 18 goals in his debut season for Cosmos, one goal behind the then winner the late Lesley Manyathela.

It means Mhango is also four goals away from equaling Kanyenda’s 18 goal record.

This could be a setback for Pirates who are unbeaten in seven matches since the appointment of Germany coach.

Mhango was not available for his comment Monday.

However, Pirates fans have reacted differently to Mhango’s suspension with others saying it was a blessing in disguise while some say it would be a big blow for Pirates.

In an interview, Flames coach Meck Mwase believes Mhango would transform his form to national team.

“It is a motivation for us and we believe anything is possible. He has proved that he is a good player and we are happy with his performance,” Mwase said.

Mhango is expected to be part of the Flames squad to face Burkina Faso in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier slated for March end.

He scored the winner in a 1-0 victory over South Sudan at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
