Malawi national football team forward, Gabadinho Mhango, has been named Player of the Month for January following his great form for his South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Orlando Pirates.

It was a double celebration for Pirates as Coach Josef Zinnbauer was also named Coach of the Month.

Mhango netted six goals in five matches last month, including a hat-trick against Polokwane City and a crucial goal in a 1-0 victory over giants Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium.

Zinnbauer was rewarded for guiding Pirates to second spot in the league just two months into his appointment.

For winning the award, Mhango recieved R10,000 (about K500,000).

One of the country’s prominent football coaches, Milias ‘Jegwe’ Pofera, said Mhango deserved the award.

“He did everything to deserve this award. He was definitely in top form for the whole of January and can win more if he continues performing,” Pofera said.

The former Big Bullets star is enjoying his best form since moving to South Africa in 2013.

He is the current leading goal scorer in the PSL with 14 goals and is just four goals shy of overtaking compatriot Essau Kanyenda’s goal scoring record in the Rainbow Nation.

Mhango has already surpassed his best goal tally when he scored nine goals in his debut season before achieving a similar feat with Bidvest Wits in 2016 to help the Clever Boys win the league title.
