Gabadinho Mhango up against 9 in Caf goal of the year


Flames striker Frank Gabadinho Mhango has said he is excited that his goal against Morocco in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) round of 16 has been nominated for Confederation of African Football (Caf) Goal of the Year award Caf released the list of 10 nominees for the inaugural award on Thursday night.

Mhango said it was an honour that his goal has been nominated for the top award.

“It feels great and I am really humbled. This is good news for me and for Malawi football,” the Amazulu FC striker said.


The list comprises high profile goals, including Zouhair El Moutaraji’s strike against Al Alhly in this year’s Caf Champions League final.

Other nominees are Ellyes Skhiri, Ben Malango, Sanaa Massoudy, Keitsumetse Dithebe, Adama Congo, Youssouf M’changama and Pap Ousmane Sakho.

Former Flames defender Moses Chavula said Mhango has high chances of winning the award.


“It is a big motivation for the player. In my opinion, that is the best goal of the year. But let us vote and support him,” Chavula, who was part of the Flames squad during the 2010 Afcon finals in Angola, said.

According to Caf, fans will have a chance to be part of selection process for the best goal of the year.

“Fans can vote for their favourite strike (http// and their voting will carry 70 percent weight on the final decision of the winning goal,” reads a statement from Caf.

Mhango scored a stunner in a 2-1 loss to Morocco.

He scored three goals during the tournament, including a brace in a 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in Group D match.

The 2022 Caf awards ceremony will take place on July 21 in Morocco.

Caf will also award African player of the year, interclub player of the year (men) young player of the year (men), coach of the year, national team of the year and club of the year.

Sadio Mane, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Kouulibaly, Mohamed Salah, Achraf Hakimi and Riyad Mahrez are some of the players nominated for the player of the year award.
