Gabadinho’s goal nominated

ON FIRE—Mhango

Flames and Orlando Pirates striker, Frank Gabadihno Mhango’s wonder goal in a 4-1 victory over Polokwane City FC last month has earned nomination for the goal of the month for January in South Africa.

Mhango’s goal will compete against 10 goals for the award received from broadcasting rights holders of the Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL).

During the game against Polokwane, Mhango scored a hat-trick.

Official website for the league, www.psl.co.za announced the nominated goals for the month of January over the weekend.

Other contenders for the goal of the month Thapelo Morena, Gift Motupa, Mogakolodi Ngele, Phathutsedzo Nance, Mlungisi Mbunjana, Ndumiso Mabena (two goals) Siphelele Luthuli and Bradley Grobler.

According to rules of the competition, the award is bestowed upon a player whose goal has received the most number of votes from the online voting poll.

The judging period will be aligned to the player/coach of the month judging period. Members of the public will be allowed to vote only once per day.

Mhango could be one of the contenders for the Player of the Month award for January.

The former Nyasa Big Bullets striker is the leading goal scorer in the PSL with 14 goals. He is just four goals away from equaling Esau Kanyenda’s 18-goal record in the PSL. His performance in his debut season for Pirates shows he is likely to attract interest from European teams.

Mhango’s manager, Mike Makaab told www. kickoff.com that Pirates should be prepared to lose the striker if he maintains his Golden Boot-winning form this season.

South African-based sports journalist, Benjamin Nyirenda who works for Soccer Laduma, said there are more good things for Mhango this season.

“As I predicted at the start of the season, I still maintain now that Gaba will finish as the top goal scorer in the Absa Premiership and also vie for the Player of the Season award. He has fitted well in the Pirates team mainly with the coming of the new coach. The players understand him and his strength and they play to that which works to his advantage,” Nyirenda said.
