Gate fees proposed for giants’ decider

With the football season over, Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) is contemplating introducing gate fees during the Rainbow Paints League decider between leaders, Kukoma Diamonds and defending champions, Tigresses.

The giants will meet at Blantyre Youth Centre on Saturday in a second-round match.

There is a possibility that the match, which was postponed last week, will attract a huge crowd.

Netball usually competes for fans with football, whose season is on break.

SRNL General Secretary, Annie Hanjahanja, said some stakeholders have suggested the introduction of the fees.

“We are pleased with the suggestions that several people are making.

It shows that they love the sport and are concerned with the plight of the teams,” she said.

Hanjahanja said they will discuss the matter with stakeholders, including Netball Association of Malawi (Nam).

“Hopefully, by Thursday we will make our stand known,” she said.

Nam General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said the introduction of gate charges was long overdue, but said there was need for consultations.

“As Nam, we are also moving in this direction but we need necessary strategies in terms of how the money will be distributed to all stakeholders,” she said.

Apart from the match involving the two giants, two more fixtures are expected to set the league on fire when Thunder Queens date Chilomoni Sisters while Gerald Tasaukadala Sisters meet Young Professionals.

During last weekend’s games, Thunder Queens defeated Alliance Capital Stars 54-25 whereas Shizaella humbled Chilomoni Sisters 39-33.

Diamonds top the table with 48 points from 16 games whereas Tigresses lie second with 42 points from 16 games.
