Gateway Netball starts on a high

The 2017 edition of Gateway Mall Netball Challenge Cup got underway over the weekend with exciting encounters.

The tournament started on Saturday in all districts which are determined to qualify for the regional finals.

In the opening week, raw talent was on display and caught the attention of spectators.

Probably, more netballers will be exposed through the tournament this year.

Lilongwe and District Netball Committee (LDNC) Chairperson, Charity Malanga, was overwhelmed with the number of teams in the tournament.

“All teams are in good shape and we are watching exciting netball. We are satisfied with the level of competition,” Malanga said.

In the games played on Sunday in Lilongwe Urban, Katalama Queens beat Kalulu whereas Green Sisters and Boma Stars drew 11-11.

But Boma underlined their class when they defeated Green Sisters 21-19 before another 24-2 victory over Model Sisters.

Black Eagles registered a 14-5 victory over Kalulu before losing 20-10 against Green Sisters.

The game between Katalama and Model ended 20-0 in favour of Katalama.

The tournament is being played in Dedza, Nkhota- Kota, Ntcheu, Mchinji, Salima, Ntchisi, Dowa and Lilongwe districts.

Mpico increased the cup’s sponsorship from K8 million to K25 million with K19 million earmarked for prize money whereas K6 million for administration of the league.
