Gemini Major to perform at UMP Fest

Rising South Africa-based musician and producer Gemini Major is set to star at this year’s Urban Music Party (UMP) Festival.

The UMP Festival will be held at BAT ground in Blantyre on November 6.

UMP Festival organisers Nde’feyo Entertainment said in a press statement that Gemini Major real name Benn Gilbert Kamoto will be among the international headliners.

The 26-year-old artist moved to Durban, South Africa, in 2009 to pursue his dream as an artist and record producer.

He has expanded his base since moving to the rainbow nation and has produced for a number of artists in a variety of genres ranging from R&B, hip-hop, house, dancehall, pop and gospel.

His portfolio includes production used in TV Shows such as Gold Diggers Season 3, Forever Young and Mo Love.

Inspired by artists such as Nigeria’s Wizkid and Jamaican reggae maestro Bob Marley, Gemini Major describes his music as “a celebration, love and life in recognition for both its pain and pleasures on a personal level as well as socially.”

After a chance meeting with renowned South African rapper Cassper Nyovest, who also has Malawian roots, at a video shoot for a song that Gemini Major had produced, he joined the Family Tree team, and he is currently working on his debut project.

Apart from producing for some of South Africa’s top artists, Gemini Major has also appeared in several songs featuring well known African stars.

UMP Festival Co-Executive Producer Zizwa Limwame said they were happy to have Gemini Major as one of the headliners during this year’s event.

“We are thrilled to have Gemini Major as the headliner of this festival. He is a Malawian, who is a rising star on the African music scene. We are sure Malawians will be given a treat with his performance. Furthermore, he will raise the profile of the UMP Festival,” Limwame said.

According to the organisers, Major joins the first international headliner Pop Dogg, who was announced in the initial line-up of performers released in August.

Pop Dogg is a Malawian hip hop artist based in Dublin, Ireland.

Other artists set to light up the festival this year include 2015 UMP Awards Artist of the Year and Song of the Year nominee Nepman, Song of the Year

n o m i n e e Sonye, Song of the Year winner Martse, Best New Artist winner Sangie, Theo Thomson, Blaze, DNA and Bucci.

The UMP Festival has also added Fredokiss, Daredevilz, Home Grown African, Charisma, Malinga Mafia, Phyzix and Dezert Eagle.

The organisers have since said more acts will be announced in due course.

In its 5th edition, UMP Festival, celebrates Malawi’s urban music, lifestyle and culture and incorporates UMP Awards, a ceremony that recognises Malawi’s exceptional urban music talent.
